SYDNEY, 5 May 2021 – AGL, Australia’s biggest energy company, is holding back efforts by Australian businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to a new report released today by Greenpeace Australia Pacific.
The report, Coal-faced: exposing AGL as Australia’s biggest climate polluter, shows the pivotal role that AGL plays in fuelling climate change in Australia, as the owner of the country’s most polluting coal-burning power stations, and the environmental and economic benefits of AGL shifting to renewable energy.
As Australian businesses ramp up their emissions reduction efforts, AGL’s stubborn adherence to its coal-burning assets is holding up Australia’s transition to a renewable-powered grid – and is becoming increasingly unprofitable, warns Dr Nikola Casule, Greenpeace Australia Pacific Head of Research and Investigations.
“AGL, Australia’s biggest climate polluter, is a business standing at the crossroads, faced with the choice between clinging to coal, or becoming a leader in Australia’s renewable energy transition. What AGL does next will determine how effectively Australia can tackle the climate crisis,” he said.
