SYDNEY, Sept 30 2020 – The decision to ignore the science and overwhelming community concerns by approving the Narrabri Gas Project could lead to the destruction of vital agricultural land, water resources and native wildlife including koalas unless Santos is unable to meet the conditions, or community opposition succeeds. This morning the IPC announced that it would allow Santos to proceed with its highly controversial and divisive plans for a gas field and processing facility subject to far more rigorous modelling and pipeline development prior to construction.
“The unacceptable impacts of the Narrabri gas project on the water supply that sits within the Southern Recharge Zone of the Great Artesian Basin, the koala population of the Nandewar-Brigalow bioregion, creeks in the Murray Darling River system and the project’s contribution to global heating should have seen this bitterly contested proposal plainly rejected,” Greenpeace Australia Pacific spokesperson, Jonathan Moylan said.
“Extracting and burning methane has already made a massive contribution to the climate crisis and turning Narrabri into a gas field would only exacerbate extreme weather events like bushfires.”
“Sussan Ley must head off the inevitable community conflict and use her powers to reject this project following the highly uncertain approval by New South Wales.”
“This is yet another example of why state governments should not be the sole decision-makers on environmental determinations.”
