While in Australia on holiday, Rupert Murdoch decided to take to Twitter to share his opinions on the health of the Great Barrier Reef. Warning: they’re far from scientific.
Unfortunately, no matter how good it looks to Rupert, the Reef’s health is deteriorating. Since 1985, half of the coral cover of the Reef has disappeared. In 2014, an Australian Government report found the Reef’s health was ‘poor and expected to further deteriorate in the future’. To make matters worse, a massive coal project on the doorstep of the Reef further threatens its health – find out more and take action here.
Unfortunately for Rupert, the Internet had something to say about his musings. Scroll down and check out some of the best responses. And if you have any gems you’d like to share with us, just post them in the comments section underneath!
@rupertmurdoch amazing, the things that the naked eye misses. Like a 50% decline in hard coral cover in the past 30 years.

@rupertmurdoch You’ve checked out all 3,000kms of it have you? — James Wheeldon (@wheeldon) August 25, 2015
Can’t quite spot the 50% coral cover that’s died and no longer there? https://t.co/F80Kh8z0rC

Your naked eye needs glasses. And scientific training, @rupertmurdoch #savethereef #50percentcoralcovergone — Larissa Waters (@larissawaters) August 25, 2015
@rupertmurdoch your eyes aren’t as good as they were 50 years ago, and neither is the reef

@rupertmurdoch I’m not a marine biologist – but here’s the crucial point, NEITHER ARE YOU — James Taylor (@notthatjt) August 25, 2015
@rupertmurdoch Thank goodness we have you, Rupert: who needs scientific evidence?

Phew, good to know there’s an expert keeping an eye on it @rupertmurdoch: To the naked eye reef looks fully as good as it did 50 years ago. — Nathalie Cohen (@Nathalie_Cohen) August 25, 2015
“@rupertmurdoch: To the naked eye reef looks fully as good as it did 50 years ago.” From space?

@rupertmurdoch to the naked eye the moon looks like it about the size of a golf ball. Luckily science is a bit more reliable than naked eye — Steve Kilburn (@SteveKilburn) August 25, 2015
