Governments failed to finalise a Global #PlasticsTreaty during the fifth and what was supposed to be final round of UN Global Plastics Treaty talks in Busan, South Korea, on Sunday night, but hope is not lost! 100 countries representing billions of people stood up to the fossil fuel industry to reject a weak treaty and band together to fight for cuts to plastic production in the treaty text.
This means talks will extend into 2025, and we won’t let world leaders forget that the only definition of a strong treaty is one that cuts plastic production, not treaty ambition!
Plastic production is a threat to our climate, health, and future—99% of plastics are made from fossil fuels, and Big Oil is investing billions in plans to triple plastic production by 2050.
This delay comes with dire consequences for people and the planet at the frontline of the plastic crisis, but WE WON’T STOP FIGHTING for a strong treaty!

In the final hours of Plastics Treaty talks, they peacefully protested for 12 hours on a tanker waiting to load TOXIC plastic chemicals to get world leaders to step up NOW to show the same courage needed to deliver a treaty that cuts plastic production.
These courageous British, Mexican, Taiwanese, and German activists represent millions all around the world calling for an end to the age of plastic. We won’t back down until leaders act with the same courage.
