Late last month, Greenpeace’s new ship, Oceania, filmed one of Woodside’s gas rigs in action – so we could expose the enormous threat the Burrup Hub poses to our spectacular oceans.
Oceania’s crew of activists set sail from sunny Exmouth on the long journey back to the East Coast. While en route, they paid a quick visit to one of Woodside’s gas rigs as it was preparing to drill deep into the ocean floor.
As part of the Burrup Hub gas mega project, the rig has recently started drilling at the Scarborough gas field, releasing toxic chemicals and emitting deafening underwater noise.
After making contact on the radio, our crew floated a safe distance away to witness Woodside’s destruction for themselves.
As campaigners, we’ve heard so much about Woodside’s monstrous Burrup Hub gas project, but watching it in person was a totally different experience.
We can confirm Woodside has already begun the first stage of its monstrous Burrup Hub gas project where it will drill 30 wells. Similar to the ones proposed our precious Scott Reef, one of the country’s most unique and ecologically significant marine environments.
They made sure to catch Woodside’s plundering of our oceans on camera – for the world to see – as it’s tactics like these that help expose the truth and hold polluting corporations accountable.
Woodside’s Burrup Hub is Australia’s biggest climate threat – and the country’s most polluting fossil fuel project currently proposed.
Over its lifetime, the Burrup Hub would produce 6.1 billion tonnes of climate pollution – equivalent to thirteen years of Australia’s annual greenhouse gas emissions.
Picturing our pristine WA oceans surrounded by even more of these gas rigs is devastating for those of us who have grown up loving our oceans and the many endangered species that call it home.
The good news is we still have a chance to stop the next phase of Woodside’s toxic proposal. Browse, which encapsulates Australia’s beautiful Scott Reef, but we need your help.
Woodside plans to drill gas from underneath pristine Scott Reef. They have a history of environmental neglect with Woodside’s own assessments showing that a well blowout, spill or vessel rupture while constructing or operating the Burrup Hub could impact dozens of threatened animal species such as the green turtle and pygmy blue whale.
We’re urgently calling on Federal Environment Minister Environment Tanya Plibersek to reject Woodside’s plans to drill 50 more gas wells surrounding Scott Reef — an ocean wonderland home to threatened and endangered species.
