SYDNEY, Thursday 18 July 2024 — In response to the Queensland Government’s release of the state’s latest land cover change report, the following comments can be attributed to Senior Campaigner at Greenpeace Australia Pacific, Gemma Plesman:
“It’s no surprise the Queensland government chose to release its latest deforestation report during last night’s State of Original final — just like the game, it’s a big lose for Queensland.
“The report reveals Queensland is still in the midst of a devastating deforestation crisis. In a single year, 323,676 hectares of the state’s precious forest and bushland was bulldozed — an area almost five times the size of Singapore, and more deforestation than all other states and territories combined.
“Significantly, the report reveals that 88% of this forest destruction was for pasture conversion, driven by the beef industry. This highlights why it’s so critical the beef industry takes real action to stop the destruction of forests and natural ecosystems happening on its watch.
“The impacts are not limited to forest ecosystems — almost half of all deforestation took place in the Great Barrier Reef catchment, leading to decreased water quality from sediment pollution. Just last month, the Reef narrowly avoided an ‘In Danger’ listing from UNESCO, with water quality specifically listed as a key issue the government must address.
“Both the government and corporate players like McDonald’s, Coles and Woolworths must act now to stop the destruction of our unique Australian wildlife, and to stand up for forest protection.”
